5 easy DIY ideas with kids!

Here are some easy DIY ideas that will keep your kids entertained!

1. The relief painting

Instead of gouache, here is a new style of "painting" that will delight them and stimulate their creativity! While drying, this painting becomes darker, and keeps its texture in relief.

Equipment
A container of beard cream
Liquid white glue
Food coloring
Steps

Provide a small bowl per color. Also think about making white!
Fill each small bowl up to half with beard cream.
Add about the same amount of glue, then mix.
Add food coloring to color the paint, a few drops at a time.
By performing some dye mixtures, it is possible to create a beautiful range of colors!
Give brushes to small artists and let them work!
Put the drawings aside to let them dry (several hours, ideally until the next day).

2. Emoji masks
In addition to entertaining children a little older, these masks will make great photos!

Equipment

Yellow card sheets
Construction paper of different colors
Scissors
Lead pencils
Stick glue
Wooden sticks
Duct tape

Steps

Let the children decide which emoji face they wish to do. It's a good idea to print a template to inspire!
Draw circles in the yellow card, with the help of a compass, a large plate, etc.
Cut out the circles.
Draw the pieces on the paper building the right color (black for the glasses, brown for the mouth, pink for the tongue, etc. Depending on the age of the children, they may need more or less help to achieve well shapes.
Cut out the pieces.
Glue the pieces in the right place on the yellow circle, with overlapping if necessary.
Glue the wooden stick that will hold the mask upside down, with duct tape.

3. Mini paper kites
Not only are they very cute, but they really work! (Even if they will not fly very high). Children can also customize them as they wish.

Equipment

Sheets of thick paper for scrapbooking
straws
String
Strong stick glue or liquid glue
Scissors
Lead pencils
Rule
Small pieces of ribbon
Material to customize if desired: stickers, paint or gouache, pencils, brilliants, etc.

Steps

1-Ask the child to choose 2 sheets of scrapbooking paper. They may be the same or not!
2-Glue one sheet over the other, smoothing well so that there are no air bubbles.
3-Using a ruler, mark with a pencil 4 lines in the paper in the bias, to form the diamond shape characteristic of a kite.
4-Cut out the shape of the kite.
5-Cut straws according to the length of the kite.
6-Glue them together and let them dry.
7-Cut a piece of string long enough to fly the kite and tie it.
8-Pass the string around the two straws, in the middle, and make a solid knot.
9-Stick the straws on the shape of the kite and allow to dry.
10-Tie small pieces of ribbon on the string to decorate.
11-Customize if desired!

4. Kinetic sand
This "sand" is very easy to do and will entertain your kids for hours! It can be carved and given the desired shape, without damage since it only adheres to itself. That's why we can play with even inside. The basic version is colorless but it would be possible to make different shades, for a spectacular effect!

Equipment

4 cups white flour all-purpose
1/2 cup of baby oil
Food coloring (optional)
Plastic tray

Step

1. Mix the ingredients vigorously in the plastic tub (which will also be used for playing and storing the "sand").

5. Barley sugar lollipops
This project is both a "do-it-yourself" activity that occupies children, a scientific experiment and a culinary recipe. Kids will love to see "growing" treats that they have prepared themselves (with a little supervision). And then, their patience will be rewarded with a small dessert! It is possible to make larger quantities: simply remember to respect a ratio of about 3 parts of sugar per 1 part of water.

Equipment

About 3 cups of sugar
1 cup of water
Food coloring
Flavors (optional), eg mint or lemon essence, etc.
Mason jars (but not those with wide necks)
Wooden sticks, for example small picks for skewers with pointed ends
Clothesline pliers

Steps
1-Mix in a saucepan the water with a cup of sugar. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring often, until sugar is completely dissolved.
2-Then add the remaining sugar, a little at a time, until the sugar is no longer dissolved in the mixture. The syrup will become a little scrambled; it is the desired texture, that of a saturated syrup.
3-Add flavor (optional).
4-Let the syrup cool a bit.
5-Meanwhile, dip the sticks in the water, then roll them in the sugar. It is very important to let the sticks dry completely before immersing them in the syrup - the sugar must adhere well to the sticks so that crystals form.
6-Pour into Mason jars (one per color).
7-Add food coloring to the jars.
8-Gently plunge a stick by Mason jar; these must not touch the bottom or sides of the pot. Hang the stick on the pliers to hold it in place, and place the pliers on the rim of the Mason jar.
9-Cover the edge of the pot with a paper towel, a small cloth or a little plastic wrap. The content does not need to be waterproof, the idea is simply to prevent dust or mosquitoes from entering the pot!
10-The most difficult part: wait! But kids will love watching the progress of their experience from day to day. Over time, the sugar will crystallize around the stick and form a lollipop. It will be ready to eat after about a week, but we can also wait longer!
